7 Weird Materials In The World You Won't Believe

1. Nitinol

nitinol wire
Nitrogen Titanium also known as Nitinol is a metal alloy of Nitrogen and Titanium. It exhibits  unique properties of superelasticity and shape memory. When it undergoes deformation due to some external force at a temperature, it remains in its deformed shape even when the external force is removed. But it regains its original shape upon heating. It shows both the properties superelasticity and shape memory effect depending upon the temperature. It exhibits the shape memory effect below the transformation temperature and above that temperature it behaves superelastically.

2. Aerogel

Aerogel is 99.8% air that makes it the world's lightest solid. It is a synthetic porous ultralight material of extremely lower density. It is derived from a gel therefore, called aerogel. It is also known as blue smoke or solid cloud. It is prepared by extracting liquid component of a gel by a process in which liquid is dried without causing the solid matrix to collapse. Pressing softly on an aerogel doesn't cause even a minor mark but pressing more firmly lead to a permanent depression.

3. Non-Newtonian fluid

Non-Newtonian fluid can be prepared easily by mixing potato starch and water uniformly. It changes its viscosity or flow behavior under stress. It acts as a solid when a sudden force is applied on it. But it behaves as a liquid when an object is still or move slowly. We can run or jump on this fluid because it acts as a solid in this case. But, if we stay still or move slowly on it, it will act as a liquid and will drown us.

4. Magnetic Thinking Putty

Magnetic Thinking Putty is composed of iron oxide powder, which is ferric (magnetic). It is a piece of fun because of its unique properties.
You may play with it by stretching, bending and bouncing it but the unique feature is that it becomes alive when comes in contact with a strong magnet. It is due to magnetic particles that are induced in it. It engulfs the magnet completely over the course of half an hour. It stretches with a slow force, breaks into two with a sudden force and with an instant impact it crushes into pieces.

5. Nitrogen triiodide

 purple cloud of iodine vapor
Nitrogen triiodide is an inorganic compound with the formula NI3. It is an extremely sensitive explosive that explodes with a loud sound. Even small quantities explode with a loud, sharp snap when touched lightly, releasing a purple cloud of iodine vapor. This property makes it unique. NI3 has a complex structural chemistry that is difficult to study because of the instability of the derivatives.

6. Ultra hydrophobic material

ultra hydrophobic nature of locus leaves
Ultra hydrophobic material when applied on a surface, makes the surface extremely hydrophobic. It is called locus effect after the ultra hydrophobic nature of locus leaves. When such a hydrophobic surface is treated with liquid, spheres of liquid are formed, and it keeps the surface completely dry.

7. Duayen Polyurea Spray

It is a magical spray that prevents wooden and steel surfaces from abrasion and corrosion damage. When it is applied to any surface, the hardness of that surface is increased to many times that is really wonderful to see. This property of polyurea spray adds it to this list of weird materials.
